Centre for Effective Altruism

The Centre for Effective Altruism (CEA) aims to promote the ideas and the movement of effective altruism. CEA organizes conferences and distributes newsletters. It supports projects, provides opportunities for promising initiatives to grow and encourages donating.

In addition, CEA provides operational support to other EA organizations such as 80,000 Hours, Giving What We Can, and the Forethought Foundation.

The Centre for Effective Altruism was founded in 2011 as an umbrella organization for Giving What We Can and 80,000 Hours. A number of organizations such as The Life You Can Save and Animal Charity Evaluators grew up under the aegis of CEA before becoming independent.

In 2017 CEA founded the donation platform Effective Altruism Funds. When you donate on this platform you indicate your preference for effective charities selected. Their recommendation is to do this via one or more of their own four funds. Each focusses on one area:

  • Health and Development
  • Animal Welfare
  • Long-term Future
  • Infrastructure

Information about the first three can be found on the relevant pages of this site. The latter fund provides support to organizations or projects that apply the principles of effective altruism.
