The Centre for Effective Altruïsm (CEA) exists in order to grow and support the effective altruism movement. They organise conferences and distribute information about events, ideas and learning resources. They support projects, offer promising initiatives the chance to grow and promote donations. In addition, they provide operational support to other EA-aligned organisations such as 80,000 Hours, Giving What We Can and the Forethought Foundation.
The Centre for Effective Altruism was founded in 2011 as an umbrella organisation for Giving What We Can and 80,000 Hours. A number of organisations such as The Life You Can Save and Animal Charity Evaluators have started under CEA’s umbrella and then become independent. CEA has offices in the US and in England.
In 2017, CEA established Effective Altruism Funds. One of these funds is the Infrastructure Fund. This fund is designed to provide support to organisations and/or projects that adopt the principles of effective altruism. They offer promising initiatives the chance to expand.
In 2022, Doneer Effectief received a start-up grant of $150,000 to further develop, professionalise and publicise the organisation.
